43 The power of brainstorming

When starting job hunting, brainstorming can be a particularly powerful tool to point you in the right direction. You can involve family and friends to help you.

The rules are as follows:

•There is an appointed facilitator who manages the event.

•Participants are chosen because of their expertise with the area being examined.

•The group should represent all areas of interest.

•All participants are to come to the meeting knowing its purpose: i.e. to help you to get a job.

•There is an appointed scribe who writes for all to see on butcher’s paper with a thick felt pen. As each page is completed it is stuck onto a wall for all to see.

•All participants voice their opinions about the matter in hand.

•Dissension is not allowed as all opinions are valid and documented.

•Continue this process.

Once the members are drained of all possible opinions the analysis phase begins. This varies according to the issues being examined.

It could take the form of a S.W.O.T. analysis in which each of the job hunting issues are grouped into one of the following: (S) Strengths (W) Weaknesses (O) Opportunities (T) Threats

Each group is analyzed to identify how they can be capitalized upon, for positives or mitigated in the case of negatives.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the participants are thanked, as you may want to use them again because of their skills and experience!

Although this technique is widely used in business it can also bring significant rewards for the Job Hunter who will obtain clarification of the chosen path.
